I bought 'Joe' about 15 years ago for farm use. I got him cheap because, well.... he smokes! He smokes at idle, he smokes when pottering round, he smokes when spraying blackberries and he smokes when you chase the hell out of the damned sheep which have escaped their paddock. You can ride him all day without needing to top up the oil though and over the past 15 years the level of smoke has not changed.Strangely enough he does not oil up the spark plug. This has led to a suspicion amongst people who know a lot more than I do, that it is the exhaust valve seal that leaks oil onto the exhaust valve which then burns off, so perhaps not dodgy compression and rings as you would first think. Smokey Joe is a Honda, that means quality and means parts are readily available. He has hi-low-reverse gears selected via a pull-and-select lever near your left ankle and a centrifugal clutch. I no longer need 'Joe' as I bought a larger and newer model Honda quad to do the general farm work and I bought a Silvan PTO spray unit to put on the tractor that is waaaay better than the little 50 litre electric spray unit I had on 'Joe''Joe' has been the farm spare for quite some time but the other Honda is just so reliable that we simply don't need two so 'Joe' can go. Joe sat in the shed for several years without any use at all until a week ago, the battery was flatter than the ex-girlfriends chest, 2 of the tyres needed air, the red-backs needed moving on. I fuelled him up and he started about 3rd pull! This is a good time to explain that 'Joe' has an electric start (but the battery is dead) and a rope start!....not a kick start but a pull rope start, Honda fitted the same system to a 200cc Agi /Trail bike back in the day, its probably the same motor! The usual Battery is a dinky little thing under the seat but I had a small car battery in the rear storage area when I was weed spraying, it gave a reserve of power and helped balance the spray unit on the front rack. The yellow battery pictured is just there to get the ignition lights to glow, its about stuffed too. 'Joe' started up easily and will now but dies when you try to rev him, I would be pretty certain that 5 years without use has seen the carby needle and seat get sticky, it should be an easy tinker to fix I'd expect. The brakes mostly work, the rear brake is the usual mechanical linkage and really needs lubricating as it sticks on at times, you have to jump off and tap it to release it. The front brake loses fluid over time. The headlight does not work but there is power to the globe, I connected into that headlight wiring to put a little LED light bar on the front rack which worked very well indeed but I have just removed it to put the light bar onto the tractor. The wiring is still there if you want to do the same trick. The plastics are pretty poor, particularly the rear guards which the previous owner sort of bolted up to plates underneath (see photo). I never bothered to fix it up more than that. The seat has a couple of splits, also see photos, I'm not hiding anything here! The tyres are all about bald but all hold air for extended periods of time. In anything but pure sloppy mud I've never lacked traction. I wont kid anyone that this is a top line unit, its not, its a farm bike that you could ride as it is (I would play with the carby first though) or you could do it up as you go. I know there are quad bike wreckers in Gippsland and at Pomborneit near Colac who stock lots of reasonable condition Honda stuff and who aren't too grievous on prices. 'Joe' is located at Edi Upper, near the King Valley and east of Benalla/Wangaratta. I miiiight even assist with delivery for fuel and a feed if you aren't too far away, otherwise you rock up with a 6x4 trailer or ute and away you go. I will help load if needed. The opening bid is my reserve, if I can't get that then 'Joe' goes straight back into the shed. end of story. Cash on Pickup is strongly preferred.
